Shayla Mombeleur key organizer of MBA Juneteenth event
As co-chair of the Massachusetts Bar Association’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee, Shayla Mombeleur is organizing a Juneteenth reception commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans.
Juneteenth, short for June 19, marks the date (June 19, 1865) when federal troops informed enslaved individuals in Texas that they were free.
The MBA Juneteenth event is slated for June 15 (5:30-7:30 p.m.) at the MBA and will feature a historical overview of Juneteenth by Dr. Deborah A. Jackson of Northeastern University School of Law, as well as remarks from keynote speaker Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea J. Campbell.
The reception will conclude with a short group walk to the Embrace sculpture in the Boston Common.
The Massachusetts Black Lawyers Association and Massachusetts Black Women Attorneys are co-sponsoring the event.
