Todd & Weld issues Statement on Ending Systemic Racism, donates to Civil Rights and Restorative Justice Project

BOSTON (June 18, 2020) – To add its collective voice to the effort to end systemic racism, and in conjunction with Juneteenth, Todd & Weld LLP has issued a statement reflecting its commitment to this critical cause and has made a significant donation to the Civil Rights and Restorative Justice Project.

“In the last months alone, we have watched together the horrific killings of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, and Breonna Taylor,” the statement reads in part.  “The cycle of events like this that repeat themselves, generation after generation, must be broken.  As a law firm, we have a commitment to equal justice for everyone, and believe this is no time for us to be silent or to stay on the sidelines.”

To put words to action, the firm has donated funds to the Civil Rights and Restorative Justice Project at Northeastern University School of Law directed by Professor Margaret Burnham.  The Project works with law students to uncover cold cases of deaths due to racial violence and seeks creative reparative justice.

“We hope and expect that our contribution to the Civil Rights and Restorative Justice Project will be part of our continued efforts to try and effect positive change in our community,” said Managing Partner Christopher Weld Jr.

Elaine Epstein, chair of the firm’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee, said: “As lawyers, we must play a vital role in addressing systemic racism and creating permanent change in the legal system. It is also important for us to honor victims of color who have been failed by that system.”
