Todd & Weld a signatory to amicus brief in support of opposition to federal Executive Order against law firm
Todd & Weld is among more than 500 law firms across the country to have signed onto an amicus brief filed in support of Perkins Coie’s effort to block a Trump Administration Executive Order targeting the firm.
Perkins Coie recently sued the Department of Justice and others in federal court to permanently enjoin the Executive Order, which sanctions the firm in retaliation for its representation of certain clients, most notably the 2016 Hillary Clinton campaign. A federal judge has temporarily blocked the Executive Order pending resolution of the permanent injunction request.
Sanctions in the Executive Order include revocation of attorney security clearances, potential loss of clients that contract with the federal government, and denial of access to federal buildings and facilities.
The brief argues that it is critical for the country’s judicial system and the rule of law that lawyers be able to represent clients without suffering governmental repercussions for doing so.
The Executive Order is among five punitive orders the federal administration has issued recently against various large law firms.
