Firm obtains one of the largest 2016 verdicts in Massachusetts
David H. Rich and Suzanne Elovecky obtained one of the largest 2016 jury verdicts in Massachusetts – a $3.5 million defamation victory in federal court on behalf of a Saudi Arabian scientist.
The defamation award was the seventh largest verdict in Massachusetts last year, according to Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly. It was one of 13 verdicts in the state of $1 million or more in 2016, as reported by the publication in its Jan. 30, 2017 issue.
Mr. Rich and Ms. Elovecky successfully represented Hayat Sindi, who sued Samia El-Moslimany and her mother arising from numerous publications accusing Dr. Sindi of fabricating and exaggerating her academic credentials.
They also obtained a post-verdict injunction in the case barring the defendant from repeating false facts in the future.
The publication also reported that a $3.5 million settlement obtained by Jeffrey N. Catalano and Eric Asquith was one of the largest 2016 settlements in the commonwealth. The settlement was on behalf of a bicyclist who suffered a brain injury after being struck by a commercial box truck.
